With #PlayingAtMyHouse, each week KEXP will announce a music-related theme to our audience and ask our listeners for examples of each theme by sharing songs on social media with #playingatmyhouse. But it’s more than just sharing songs. Our hope is people will take it as an opportunity to interact with each other by sharing opinions, recommendations based on other people’s picks, memories attached to the songs, or whatever else may come up for you. This week's theme is Mom Songs.
As Mother’s Day approaches this Sunday (consider this your reminder in case it slipped your mind with everything else going on in the world), we’re using this week’s #PlayingAtMyHouse theme to celebrate and reflect on motherhood. Broadly, these can be songs written specifically about moms, written from the perspective of being a mom, or simply just reminds you of something about your own mom or maternal figure. Or maybe you’re a mom yourself and you have a song the reminds you of your own experiences.
Relationships with our mothers are unique, some are extremely close and others have faced more hardships with one another. This week’s theme should be interpreted to whatever fits you and your life experiences the best as well as what you’re most comfortable with. Choices can be as uproarious and fun as Seattle band Childbirth’s “Will You Be My Mom” to as thoughtful as Tupac’s “Dear Mama.”
We have a few choices below to help get you started with ideas. What songs remind you of your mom? What stories might you want to share about motherhood and music? Remember to share your favorites by Tweeting #PlayingAtMyHouse or commenting on our posts on Facebook and Instagram.
Each week KEXP is asking you to share songs on social media based off a theme with #PlayingAtMyHouse. This week, we're sharing our favorite cover songs.
