On July 15, KEXP announced major changes coming to our on-air programming schedule. These changes include some familiar faces to longtime KEXP fans as well as new DJs to our roster that we can't wait for you to get acquainted with. Learn a bit about the DJs who will be moving into these new slots below.
Gabriel Teodros is a musician and writer from South Seattle who first left an impression with the group Abyssinian Creole, and reached an international audience with his critically-acclaimed solo debut Lovework. He has released over ten projects since, and set stages on fire touring all across the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Ethiopia and South Africa; often in combination with workshops on creative writing, music, history, science fiction and media literacy.
As a DJ on KEXP, Teodros held down The Overnight Show from Friday night - Saturday morning for the last three years, while occasionally filling in for other variety shows and specialty shows like Sunday Soul, Street Sounds and Wo' Pop. He worked with community members and co-workers to establish and lead Indigenous Peoples Day programming at KEXP, and he's hosted interviews for KEXP with Brittany Howard, Nikkita Oliver, A Tribe Called Red, Mick Jenkins, Nikki Jean, Omar Offendum, Be Steadwell, Calina Lawrence and many more.
Larry Mizell, Jr. is a writer, DJ, and dot-connector based in Seattle, WA.
Albina Cabrera is a radio host, content producer, and music publicist from Argentina. For more than a decade she has worked creating content about the independent music scene in Spanish. Her interest is to communicate identities, diversity, and gender perspectives in Latin American music. She worked in government dependencies such as the Secretary of Public Media of Argentina, Ministry of Culture, and Télam, the National News Agency. Albina created and coordinated radio and audiovisual projects such as Miernes, a platform for virtual concerts and interviews. In 2019, the Senate of Argentina awarded her with an honorable mention, Juana Azurduy de Padilla, for her performance in the culture of her country.
Albina is a KEXP's fan and that's why in 2018, she traveled to Seattle to collaborate on El Sonido as a volunteer. Currently, she makes podcasts for Radio Nacional Rock 93.7 (the public radio station of Argentina). Also, she works as a publicist for El Mató a un policía Motorizado, Benito Cerati, Terror Cactus, Tres Leches and as PR for LATAM of Devil in the Woods label, born in San Francisco and currently based on CDMX. Albina believes in the power of music to connect people regardless of borders, visas, or languages.
Sharlese Metcalf began her radio career at Green River Community College in 2001 hosting their Northwest music focused show Local Motion on KGRG. She attained her Broadcasting Certificate from Green River, and was offered a job at Jones Radio Networks. There, she worked on Classic Country and Top 40 shows as a production assistant. While at Jones Radio, she was given a KEXP internship to work on the show Audioasis as an assistant to the host and booker. In 2009, She became an Audioasis producer and hosted the show until 2018. She currently fills the role of Education & Community Engagement Manager at KEXP and Mechanical Breakdown and is a rotating host for KEXP's Expansions . Sharlese additionally works as yoga DJ, promotes events at clubs around town and currently serves as a Board member on the Seattle Music Commission and The Recording Academy.
Lace Cadence is a Seattle-based DJ and the founder of Trophouse Thursdays at Seattle’s Sugar Hill. Lace spins a signature blend of afrobeat, dancehall, rap and r&b, with a passion for amplifying music from the African continent and across the diaspora.
Lace is a frequently featured DJ and collaborator with Palmwine Experience and Champagne Sundays, Seattle-area events celebrating the Afro-contemporary experience.
Lace was raised in the Central District and first immersed in the local Seattle music scene as a child during the height of grunge in the 90’s. As an emcee and vocalist, Lace made waves with his early solo career and as one third of rap outfit Clockwork. He is the one third of the electronic r&b outfit The Flavr Blue, and has performed across the country and internationally, including Dakar, Tokyo, and Stockholm.
Reverend Dollars aka Renee Jarreau (she/they) is a Seattle-based DJ, musician, and producer who is the founder of the Darqness Seattle Queer and Trans People of Color Arts Collective, as well as a member of the BabexHouse collective. Her work focuses on bringing together marginalized Black, Trans, and Queer communities through the mediums of music and dance, with energetic DJ sets known for house, club, and hiphop beats played at a frenetic pace.
