Singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle has died at the age of 38. His family confirmed the news on Earle's social media on Sunday night, writing:
It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin. So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin 💔
Earle was born in Nashville, TN, to Carol Ann Hunter Earle and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Steve Earle, who named his son in honor of his mentor Townes van Zandt. The elder Earle was in-and-out of his son's life, as documented on Justin's album trilogy of Single Mothers (2014), Absent Fathers (2015), and Kids in the Street (2017). As a pre-teen, he dropped out of school to tour in his father's band, The Dukes, but was ultimately fired on account of drug use.
As a solo artist, Earle released his debut EP, Yuma, in 2007, getting signed to Bloodshot Records. In 2009, the Americana Music Association awarded him New and Emerging Artist of the Year. His most recent release was last year's full-length The Saint of Lost Causes, his eighth album, released via New West Records. KEXP's Music Director Don Yates called it a "well-crafted blend of roots-rock, country, folk, blues, boogie and more, combining a lean sound with well-crafted lyrics revolving around the struggles of the downtrodden, disadvantaged, and exploited."
Earle is survived by his wife, Jenn Marie, and their daughter Etta St. James.
