Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has died. He was 50. The band was currently on tour in South America and preparing for a show in Bogotá, Colombia. The news was confirmed by the band in a statement on Twitter:
"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live with us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."
Hawkins has been a core member of Foo Fighters since 1997 following the band's recording of their sophomore record The Colour and the Shape. Previously, he had been the touring drummer for Alanis Morissette on her Jagged Little Blue tour and appeared in the music videos such as her hit "You Oughta Now." Hawkins struck up a quick kinship and documented friendship with bandleader Dave Grohl. Hawkins' first record with the band came with 1999's There Is Nothing Left To Lose. The album won Best Rock Album in 2001, the band's first of 12 Grammy Awards for the band as of today. Foo Fighters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 by Paul McCartney.
Hawkins' final album with the band was 2021's Medicine at Midnight. The band had recently just starred in their own feature film, Studio 666, released at the end of February 2022. Hawkins also performed and recorded with numerous other groups, including Coheed and Cambria, Eagles of Death Metal, Chevy Metal, and his own solo project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders. Hawkins contributed vocals to several Foo Fighters songs, including "Cold Day In The Sun" and numerous live covers of Queen and Pink Floyd.
