EMEL is the simplified alias of Tunisian-born, New York-based art-pop singer, producer, and activist Emel Mathlouthi. She rose to international fame in the early 2010s as "the voice of the Arab Spring" for her iconic track "Kelmti Horra" that served as a protest anthem during the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. She recently released her latest full-length album MRA on April 19th. Meaning 'woman' in Arabic and featuring only women collaborators, MRA is a multi-genre meld of African trap, batucada, Arabic reggaeton, hip-hop, and drum n’ bass that seeks to amplify and strengthen the voices of women worldwide.
In regards to her eclectic, exclusive guest DJ mix for Midnight in a Perfect World, EMEL shares: "This is a mix of tracks that I personally enjoy deeply, they just hit my core in many different ways, a tribute to my culture and its plurality, where I come from, where my heart settles and where my ears are stimulated the most."
